25 Names of Christ: Mighty God

The title of ‘Mighty God’ is translated from the Hebrew ’êl Gibbôr, which means ‘Divine Hero’, ‘Hero-God’ or even ‘Warrior God’. These words ascribe to the Messiah wisdom and strength in great measure.

When the Assyrian armies, led by Sennacherib invaded Judah, King Hezekiah spoke to his people, reminding them that a ‘Mighty God’ was on their side:

“Be strong and courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him: for there be more with us than with him: With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the Lord our God to help us, and to fight our battles.” (2 Chronicles 32:7-8)

Jesus Christ, the ‘Mighty God’ of whom Isaiah prophesied, will fight our battles, too. As we struggle and strive to do what is right, He will be there to help us and as the Apostle Paul wrote to the Romans, “If God be for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31)
