“One of my favorite accounts of the Savior teaching by the Spirit occurred on the glorious day of His resurrection in the Holy Land.
.
“Two of His disciples were on the road from Jerusalem to a village called Emmaus when the resurrected Savior joined them on their journey.
.
“The scriptures tell us His disciples did not recognize Him for “… their eyes were holden that they should not know him.”
.
“These two disciples had a very personal and touching experience with their Lord and Master.
.
– “And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, [Jesus] expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
– “And … they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.
– “And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.
– “And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.
– “And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?” – Luke 24:27-32
.
.
“What a wonderful experience!
.
“How would it be to be taught face to face by the resurrected Savior and to have Him personally administer the bread as a symbol of His atoning sacrifice?
.
“You would think those experiences alone would have been sufficient to recognize the Savior.
.
“But note the evidence these disciples used to confirm that it was indeed Him … “Did not our heart burn within us …?”
.
“It was that personal witness borne to their hearts by the Holy Ghost which gave them the conviction they had been with Jesus.”
.
“I’ve had many moments listening to talks in sacrament meetings or from church leaders where I’ve felt this confirming witness that what they were teaching was true.
.
“The Sprit seemed to be “burning” the teaching into my mind and heart, making it part of me, permanently changing my perspective and under-standing.
.
“Over time, I have become better at identifying when it is taking place.”
